At the Retreat you can participate in
Tai Chi Practice and Instruction
Clear your mind, relieve your body of stress and worries, find your inner peace by joining in Tai Chi practice in several garden areas such as The Camellia Garden, The Azalea Garden, The Sunken Garden, The Bamboo Garden and the Asian Garden.
Tai Chi instruction for beginners includes learning the basic beginner Tai Chi postures and techniques and learning a beginner Tai Chi form. You should attend the beginner Tai Chi level if you have never done Tai Chi before or if you have been practicing for less than 6 months.
Level 2 instruction is for persons who have practiced Tai Chi for 6 months or more. You will learn a new form beyond the beginner's form and more instruction on the next level.
Meet your Retreat Leader and Instructor
Michelle Beardslee



Michelle is certified by Master Jesse Tsao Ph.D. 13th lineage Tai Chi Master. Her certifications are in Chen Style Tai Chi Chinese Martial Arts. She is certified to teach Beginner Level students and also holds a second certification to teach at an Associate Level. She became a Tai Chi instructor in 2013 after study and training in Tai Chi under Master Tsao. She continues to study and train under Master Tsao to continue to advance her certifications. Before becoming a Tai Chi Instructor Michelle trained in multiple styles of Martial Arts including Krav Maga - Israeli self defense, Mixed Martial Arts - Taekwondo, Aikido and weapons defense, and Jiu Jitsu. She began her love for Martial Arts as a young child when her father who held a black belt level in Shotokan and Okinawan Karate taught her those styles.
Michelle has been instructing martial arts, dance and fitness classes for 25 years.
She holds certifications in: Tai Chi & Qigong, Pilates, Personal Training, Group Fitness, Dance, Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition and Prenatal & Postnatal Fitness.
She is currently an Instructor at the Wellness Center of Thibodaux Regional Hospital for the Fitness Center of Thibodaux Regional in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Instructing Chinese Martial Arts, Tai Chi / Chi Kung (Qigong) indoor classes, Aqua Tai Chi / Chi Kung (Qigong), Classical Pilates Mat classes, Aqua Pilates, Linedance and Aqua Dance classes.
Also instructing Pilates mat classes, Tai Chi / Chi Kung (Qigong) and Kpop Dance Fitness currently at Brickhouse Cardio Club in Houma, Louisiana.
Michelle currently has a fitness and Tai Chi program at Da Swamp indoor trampoline park in Houma / Houma Martial Arts. At this location she is teaching Trampoline Fitness, Pilates, Stretch & Flexibility, Fitness class with hand weights, Fit Mom class, Mommy & Me Exercise, Baby Play Date class, Fit Kids, Teen Fit, Dad & Me Bootcamp, Bellydance, Kpop Dance Fitness, Kpop Dance Classes, Tai Chi Berginner class, Tai Chi Qigong Flow class, Tai Chi Short Form class, Tai Chi Long Form Class and Tai Chi Qigong Breathe class.
After graduating highschool where she participated in track and dance team in 1994 she opened a dance school in Houma, Louisiana and Michelle instructed Ballet, Tapp, Jazz, Hiphop , Lyrical & Modern Dance and Jazzercise & Dance Exercise classes.
She instructed Group Fitness classes, Pilates Mat and Pilates Stability Ball, Stretch and Flexibility, Step Exercise, Stability Ball Fitness, Senior Fitness, Senior Stability Ball Fitness, Senior Stretch, Dance Fitness, Ballet Fitness, Salsa Dance Fitness, Swing, Lindy, Charleston Dance Fitness, Belly Dance Fitness, Tapp Dance Fitness, Hip Hop Dance Fitness, Brazilian Samba Dance Fitness, Hawaiian Dance Fitness, Mommy and Me Dance and Exercise, and was a Personal Trainer at the YMCA in Houma, LA.
Instructed Mommy & Me Dance Exercise classes & Pregnant Mommy & Me Dance Exercise at Gerald Dishman's Academy of Dance in Houma, LA.
Michelle opened another Dance School in 2007 where she instructed Christian inspired dance classes, Lyrical, Ballet, Tapp, HipHop, Vocal Lessons, Mommy & Me Dance Exercise Classes, Adult and Children's Fitness Classes and Personal Fitness & Nutrition Training.
She also instructed Exercise Classes and did Personal Training for teachers and faculty at several churches and schools in Houma, Louisiana.
She was a volunteer soccer coach for several years while her oldest daughter participated in the sport.
Instructed Tai Chi, Classical Ballet Dance classes, Etiquette classes, Family Exercise, Mommy & Me Exercise, Group Exercise, Creative Movement & Music for toddlers, Korean Pop Hip Hop Dance at The Martial Arts Studio in Houma, LA.
She instructed Tai Chi, Pilates mat classes, Mommy & Me dance exercise, Stretch & Flexibility classes and Weight loss aerobics at Anela's Yoga & Wellness.
Michelle lived in New Orleans in 2015 and instructed Pilates mat classes at Manhattan Fitness and French Riviera Fitness.
She is the mother of 5 beautiful daughters that range in ages from 1 1/2 to 18.
Michelle believes that Tai Chi should be part of your lifestyle. It is something that you should practice everyday to bring focus and peace to your mind and balance and flexibility to your body. Not only Tai Chi but a lifestyle of fitness and healthy diet can increase your quality of life so much!

Retreat Schedule (tentative)
11 a.m. - Leave Houma library to drive to Avery Island.
12:45 - 1 p.m. - Arrive at Jungle Gardens Gatehouse, restroom break, refreshments, walk or ride to 1st Tai Chi location, TBA
1 - 1:25 p.m. - Announcements, Introductions, Education about Tai Chi & Chi Kung (Qigong) health benefits, breathing techniques, connection to ancient Chinese medicine.
Take group photos. Warm- ups, meditative breathing exercises to clear the stress,
worries & tension from the body.
1:25 - 1:30 p.m. - 1st practice of the day in the gardens along the trail.
Beginner's Tai Chi Chuan Form
For those of you who already know beginner's form and those who want to follow along. No instruction, just practice.
1:30 - 1:40 p.m. - Walk or ride to 2nd garden location. TBA. snack, refreshments,
Tai Chi demonstration by instructor.
1:40 – 1:50 p.m. - Tai Chi instruction for beginners. (All are welcome to attend).
1:50 - 2 p.m. - Chi Kung (Qigong) instruction and explanation of each posture's health benefits as relates to each system of the human body.
Beginners and anyone can attend.
2 - 2:10 p.m. - Walk or ride to 3rd garden location. TBA.
refreshments, video opportunity - demonstrating beginner's form. Sign up only.
Person's skills must be evaluated to be in video.
Ride to restroom break & come back to 3rd location.
2:10 – 2:20 p.m. - Tai Chi practice, Beginner's Form
2:20 – 2:30 p.m. - Chi Kung (Qigong) practice.
Beginners and experienced can do this practice. (10 min. practice).
2:40 - 2:50 p.m. - Walk or ride to 4th garden location TBA,
refreshments, Tai Chi demonstration by instructor and person's who have
been practicing Tai Chi for 6 months or more. (video opportunity). Sign up only.
2:50 - 3 p.m. - Tai Chi walking instruction. Beginners and anyone can attend.
3 - 3:10 p.m. – Quiet meditation in the garden, sit on blanket or bring portable chair. Listen to nature and reflect on the beauty and peacefulness around you.
Bring the harmony of the peacefulness into your life.
3:10 - 3:20 p.m. - Tai Chi Cloud Walking instruction.
Beginners and anyone can attend.
3:20 - 3:30 p.m. - Walk or ride to 5th garden location TBA,
refreshments, video opportunity - demonstrating Cloud Walking - sign up only.
3:30 - 4 p.m. - Instruction for Level 2 person's, learn new form, sign up only, person's background and months of training must be evaluated to do the Level 2 instruction.
4 - 4:10 p.m. - Walk or ride to 6th garden location TBA,
refreshments, presentation by instructor and Level 2 person's
demonstrating new form learned in Level 2 instruction.
4:10 - 4:15 p.m. - Tai Chi walking & Cloud walking practice
4:15 - 4:20 p.m. - Video opportunity, Chi Kung (Qigong). Sign up only.
Must be evaluated to participate.
4:20 – 4:30 p.m. – Stretch cool down
4:30 – 5 p.m. - Eat dinner, snacks, refreshments, dessert,
listen to the peaceful traditional Chinese instrumental music,
seating on blankets or bring a portable chair,
picnic tables or portable tables that we will bring.
Restroom, gather in vehicles to travel back to Houma Louisiana.
6:30 p.m. approx.. – Arrive back in Houma at the main library location
near the civic center.
